A Bigger, Better Emergency Department 

Strong Progress on the Second Floor

Torrance Memorial Medical Center is making strong progress on a major expansion of its emergency department (ED)—an investment designed to better serve the South Bay community now and into the future. The two-story ED expansion is well underway and is expected to open in spring 2027.

As construction continues, the vision for the expanded ED is beginning to take shape. On the second floor, framing is in progress, transforming floor plans into visible patient rooms and care areas. At the same time, essential behind-the-scenes infrastructure is being installed, including upgraded electrical and data systems, plumbing, fire sprinklers and a modern pneumatic tube system. These improvements will support safe, efficient operations once the new space opens.

A critical component of the project is enhancing the triage experience, which plays a vital role in emergency care. Construction to expand the number of triage bays began last fall and is expected to be completed this spring. This improvement will allow patients to be assessed more quickly upon arrival, helping streamline care during busy periods. During construction, the ED remains fully operational using a temporary triage area located adjacent to the waiting room.

On the first floor, steel framing for a new reception desk has been installed, creating a more welcoming and organized arrival experience for patients and families. Meanwhile, the second floor continues to take shape with framed patient rooms and clearly defined care pods designed to support privacy, safety and efficient patient flow.

The expansion also includes important upgrades for staff. The former neonatal intensive care unit on 3 Tower is being converted into dedicated ED staff support areas, providing space for care teams to collaborate, recharge and prepare—an essential part of delivering exceptional patient care.

Construction activity is occurring primarily during early-morning hours, and some noise is expected as work continues in multiple areas of the hospital. Torrance Memorial is committed to proactive communication and thoughtful planning to minimize disruption while ensuring patient comfort and safety.

When completed, the expanded ED will significantly enhance Torrance Memorial’s ability to care for patients in emergencies—offering more space, improved efficiency and advanced technology to meet the evolving needs of the community.
